Play it Louder Phil
Sluggish play and little discipline from manager Yogi Berra put the Yanks in third place in mid-August. All that changed when Berra finally exploded in a full rage when SS Phil Linz was having fun playing music on his harmonica on a bus trip following being swept in a three game series. “Stop the music,’ yelled Berra. Linz looked up and asked “What did he say?” Mickey Mantle with a smile on his face shouted back, “He said to play it louder.” Which Linz did, sending Yogi into a rage and Mantle laughing hysterically. Linz was fined and It might have been a coincidence but the Yankees woke up and went on a 30-11 run to sneak past the White Sox and Orioles for the pennant.
Great storytelling, as usual. Nothing to do with this, but I just read about another fallen giant's passing, Gaylord Perry.
