The 1962,120 losses by the Met’s expansion roster of other team castaways still stands as a record for futility. The Mets started their inaugural season 0-9 and proceeded to have losing streaks of 11, 13, and 17 during the season. The pitching staff had two 20-game and one 19-game loser. Their record against the Dodgers and Giants was a combined 6 – 30, and against the other expansion team, Houston Colt 45’s, 3 -13. With his many errors, 1B Marvelous Marv Throneberry grew to be the poster child of the team. In one game, Marv hit a triple only to be called out for not touching first. manager Casey Stengel came out of the dugout in a rage to protest the call but was forced to walk back sheepishly when the umpire informed him that Marv also forgot to touch second.
