July 4, 1905, at Huntington Park in Boston, two of the best pitchers of this early era, Cy Young of the Boston Americans and Rube Waddell of the Philadelphia A’s squared off in the second game of a doubleheader. What transpired was a marathon unlike any game seen before. On a hot day, with players wearing wool uniforms, both pitchers went twenty innings before the A’s scored twice in the top of the twentieth and held on to win 4-2. The winning run was driven in by none other than Waddell. The A’s ace gave up 2 runs in the first inning and then shut out the Americans for 19 innings. Young had given up two tying runs in the sixth and then shutdown the A’s for 13 innings. Waddell gave up 15 hits, walking four, Young allowed 12 hits and walked none. Waddell had also pitched the final inning of game one of the doubleheader. The child like Waddell did cartwheels across the infield after retiring the final batter. It should also be noted that A’s catcher Ossee Schrecongosi caught all 20 innings after having caught the nine-inning first game of the doubleheader., The 12,666 fans got their money’s worth.
